When I sat down to write this post I thought about so many different ways I could tell this story. I’ve known Keren, Jack’s mum, for a long time. Our sons are best friends and we spend a lot of time together.
So this could have been a story about planning for a third baby and all that that entails. About the conversations around how complicated (and yet somehow instinctive) that decision can be.
Or this could have been a story about the bizarre things people feel comfortable saying to an expectant mother - things like “after two boys you must really be hoping for a girl”.
Or it could have been about forty-and-a-half weeks of uncomfortable, dragging, waiting for a baby that seemed too comfortably ensconced to make an appearance in the outside world.
Or the weighty decision of choosing a name that will satisfy everyone (thankfully Jack Norling had the confident ring of a Lee Child/Tom Clancy action hero, making it the obvious front-runner).
But as I sat down to write any of those stories I realised that actually none of those things matter anymore. All that matters is that Jack has calmly, quietly and perfectly completed this family. Will and Archie, his older brothers, have instantly made the leap to proud protector and companion for this tiny boy they’ve only just met and Jack has slotted into family life as if he’d always been there. This is a story about a perfectly complete family. I hope you enjoy the images that go with it…
