I don’t know if your family is anything like mine but when we get together the cacophony of sound, the mad waving of arms, the running, laughing or sulking of children – it all makes for a fairly chaotic time. So when I was approached to photograph a family get together of four generations, ranging 90 years to just 6 months, I figured I had my work cut out for me!
The venue was to be Auckland’s Cornwall Park, the weather was meant to be thunderstorms, and there were going to be roughly 40 people in all. I practiced my very best ‘loud teacher’ corralling voice, gathered my gear and hoped the weather gods were with us.
But do you know what happened? The skies cleared (but the threat of rain was enough to keep most other passers-by away) and the most amazing family, 4 generations of them, turned up with smiles on their faces and warmth in their hearts, totally ready to embrace the chaos!
I feel very lucky to have played a small part in their family weekend, by capturing the magic that occurs when siblings, cousins and parents come together to celebrate their family. A huge thank you to the Esther family for your patience, your willingness and your kindness. I hope you love this record of your family afternoon together.
