Before your baby arrives other parents will tell you that time flies and that you should cherish every moment with your gorgeous child. And yet in those first bleary, sleep deprived days it can be hard to believe that time can move at anything other than a repetitive meander. But suddenly you find you’ve emerged from the newborn cocoon and you’ve got this cool little bundle that does “stuff”. They’re smiling and babbling and they just rolled over and you’re convinced that the rocking on the floor is going to become crawling any moment! Suddenly the days ARE speeding by and you want to be able to freeze every new milestone moment.
Maybe you had a newborn session when your bundle was born, or maybe things felt a bit too overwhelming then. Either way, it’s never too late to celebrate the magic of family life.
Recently I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a number of infants at different stages and I wanted to share with you some of the things I love to capture about each age.
The First 5 Months
I love the infant stage! Cute chubby thighs, real smiles and a range of gorgeous expressions (not all of them fully controlled!) typify this stage. At this time I love to capture tummy time with baby raising their head to look for mum. This is a great time for shots of dad flying his baby over head, or mum blowing raspberries on that round little belly. At this age baby is less mobile and more easily contained. They also love to chew on anything in sight. So one of my all time favourite things to capture is baby on their back holding their feet (or trying to get them in their mouth!). If you’re considering an infant portrait session it’s good to know that baby probably won’t be able to stay awake and alert for too long, 45 minutes in-home generally results in a great range of images. In terms of wardrobe, I love still seeing lots of soft, delicate baby skin at this age, so rompers or nappy only shots are great!
6 to 9 Months
It’s during this time that your baby is likely sitting (with or without support), and they may even try standing or “cruising” around the furniture. Crawling is common around this stage, and their active little hands will be looking to exercise their grip on anything within reaching distance! At this stage I love capturing loving glances towards mum and dad, details of pudgy dimpled fingers and toes, and beautiful character filled portraits. This is a wonderful time to photograph baby attempting to stand or take steps with mum and dad’s help. It’s also a great time for lots of cuddly smiling snuggle shots with family.
9 Months - 1 Year
By this time your baby might be standing or even walking. This is a fantastic time to take authentic close up portraits and shots of baby trying to take steps towards mum and dad or the camera. This is also a magical time to take sibling photos as older siblings have generally adjusted to their “new addition” and are showing nothing but love and cuddles. Some babies in this age group will have teeth clearly visible, and this can be another great detail to capture, as are those glorious long eyelashes!! At this age babies can generally handle longer stints and so an outdoor session in the wonderful warm “golden hour” can be beautiful.
