Every so often a family reaches out to me from waaaaaaaaay outside of New Zealand. Usually, like these folks, it’s a family coming home for the holidays and looking to capture some special memories while they’re here. It’s a unique pleasure being able to capture those memories, knowing that they’ll be cherished for not only the moment they capture but the people and places that they conjure up.
The Bailey family were back in Auckland over the Christmas break. Sharing time with beloved grandparents and giving their baby Felix new ground to scoot around on. They were keen to capture his current phase - bum shuffling into all kinds of tight corners - and they also wanted to commit to print older sister Alice’s love of books, imaginative play and treasured “Ellie”. Sometimes when I know that I’m not photographing a family in their own home I worry that I won’t be able to draw out authentic moments that celebrate those current “age and stage” markers. But once again this family proved that home and is where ever your people are. In the comfort of gran and grandad’s house these little ones showed me exactly how they love to spend time - with their favourite things and in the arms of their favourite people.
Helen and Abram, thank you so much for making time for me on your trip to Auckland. It was such a pleasure meeting you and I hope you love these images from our morning together.
