One of the true pleasures of my job is being invited into the sacred cocoon of a post-delivery suite for a fresh48 or “first days” session. I often describe it as a cocoon because it’s warm and cozy and almost entirely detached from the outside world.
And also because underlying the hush in that space is a palpable sense of metamorphosis. It whispers, “tread lightly, a little life is emerging'“. A tiny person is becoming aware of the great big world into which they’ve awoken. Stretching out scrawny, peach fuzz covered arms in search of the warmth of the people that they are now entirely reliant upon.
But something else is emerging too. Love for this new tiny life can rush on with the most surprising urgency. Suddenly, through a veil of sleep deprivation and whirling emotions parents are awakening too. Realising that the reliance is entirely mutual.
It is an honour to witness that freshly developing bond first hand. It reminds me of my own first days as a new parent. And so when Katrina and Tom thanked me for my patience with them as they started to get a handle on this thing called parenthood I felt like it should really be me thanking them.
Thank you K & T for inviting me into the cocoon. For allowing me a quick sample of that heady brew of newness. I hope that you are continuing to enjoy all of your firsts with Katie and that you love this record of her first days.
