When I walk into a home for a lifestyle photo session I almost immediately get a sense of the family who lives there and the vibe of the session to come. Sometimes that comes from a clue in the decor and artwork or the other photographs and memories on the wall. Other times it will be music playing or the background soundtrack of kids playing or watching TV while they wait for mum to finish feeding the baby. When I met the the Gould family it was the way I was greeted at the door by proud big sister Charlotte.
Charlotte had apparently been anxiously anticipating my arrival. Asking for days when the photographer lady was coming. She was keen as beans to show me around the house and to make sure that I had met her adorable new brother Sebastian. This warm, welcoming energy set the tone for our session. We read books, we did a tour of the toys, discovered a container full of gems and then spent the rest of the time cuddling (well, they did - I just captured all that snuggly goodness).
I was fascinated to learn about this intrepid family’s history, travelling the world following Stephen’s work in the hotel industry. Charlotte was born in Thailand, a completely different experience to little brother Sebastian’s arrival at nearby North Shore Hospital. The family is relatively new to Auckland, but they’ve already set up such a welcoming home here. I wondered what would be next, where these little people will get to explore and what wonders of the world would become second nature to them in the future. One thing was clear - this is a family that know that home is not a location or any four walls - home is where their great big, warm, welcoming hearts are. Snuggled up close and holding each other tightly.
Geraldine and Stephen thank you so much for spending a lovely morning with me. It was a pleasure getting to know you all and I hope that you love this record of our time together.
