There’s is truly nothing nicer for me that being invited back to photograph the same family after the arrival of each addition. It’s like visiting with old friends and catching up after too much time apart.
When I initially met Amanda and Andy it was to photograph their beautiful first-born, Ari. Now a gorgeous and spirited toddler, Ari has had a promotion to “big brother” (arguably the best job in the business). He proudly showed me his new room (the family having moved not just homes but cities) and his favourite toys and books. Then, when it was time he showed me the best “new thing” of all - little Leo.
Leo looks like his brother in many ways. There’s a similarity in their cheeks and eyes. But there’s also subtle differences that make the process of photographing them both so fascinating to me.
One of the other joys of a newborn session with Number Two is that the range of emotions is so much more complex. There’s the usual fascination and love and adoration I see with every newborn. But I also get to witness this new form of pride that parents are feeling for the first time - as they watch their eldest hug and nurture and dote on their new sibling. That was here in spades with the Abels.
Amanda and Andy, thank you so much for inviting me back to share in your family’s joy and growth. As always it was a delight to see you guys - you just make my job so easy. I hope you enjoy looking through these moments from our morning together.
