I overheard someone say the other day that “all new babies look the same”. I felt almost compelled to interject in a total Nancy Know-it-all moment. As a family photographer I meet so many new babies. And I know that every one is uniquely gorgeous and utterly different from the next.
Take Marlie for instance. She is a petite, raven haired princess with a deeply adorable little dimple in one cheek. That stranger’s assertion that all babies are just “bald and round ” does not apply here. When I met her at 12 days old she was already asserting her personality and had her parents well and truly in their right place (namely - wrapped around her delicate little finger).
Marlie’s start in the world had been a flurry of attention from nurses and midwives as she struggled to gain weight initially. I had a similar experience with my own tiny tot and I could sympathise wholeheartedly with the exhaustion her parents Michaela and Josh were feeling. So it was my hope that this newborn photo session could be a moment of respite from the draining monotony of feeding and expressing and heating stored milk and worrying about when you’d steal a moment’s sleep in between. I wanted to give Michaela and Josh a couple of hours of time to just snuggle and really take their darling girl in. To take a moment to notice her beautiful delicate features without the hustle of getting to the next phase in the eat/sleep/change/repeat cycle. So that’s just what we did. Over two hours we just hung out. Marlie ate a bit and slept a little and spent most of her time lovingly cuddled. These photos are just a little snippet of that time.
Michaela and Josh thank you so much for inviting me in to your home. You guys are doing so well with gorgeous Marlie and I hope you love this account of your morning with her.
