How to make your brand photos work harder
You’ve booked your brand photoshoot, picked your outfits, and nervously posed in front of the camera. The photos come back, and they’re great! Gorgeous lighting, flattering angles, your best smile. But something’s missing. Your ideal clients aren’t flooding your inbox.
Lots of entrepreneurs who book brand shoots end up with nice pictures that look pretty for social media but don’t actually convert browsers into paying clients. And that’s a trap I want to help you avoid!
Brand photos can be a powerful lead‑generation tool, as long as you plan and use them strategically. Here’s what most brand shoots miss, and how you can make sure yours works as hard as you do.
Your photos need to be purposeful, not just pretty
It’s easy to think brand photos are just “pretty pictures” for Instagram. But hard working brand images should have a clear goal in mind: attract your ideal client, build trust, and encourage lead conversion.
So ask yourself, are your photos showcasing the problem you solve? Your unique approach? Your personality? Or are they generic headshots and copied poses that could belong to anyone?
When you work with a photographer who understands marketing, your images become part of a bigger story. That story should make your dream clients say “Yes, that’s exactly what I need.”
Real example
Take a look at this example from Michael at Epic Wellbeing. Michael’s understanding of his target audience is laser focused. He’s a former NZ representative in competitive cycling who also managed an intense corporate career before cancer turned his whole world upside down. Now he coaches men recovering from cancer to reclaim their strength, energy and resilience. It was important to Michael that his brand shoot showcased his experience on multiple fronts and could be used to quickly demonstrate his expertise on nutrition and exercise while building trust through authentic representation. Michael’s 90 minute shoot spanned indoors and out and resulted in around 90 images. Here’s a few:
Variety is your best friend - one look does not fit all
I’m not just talking about wardrobe here, I mean variety in settings, poses and moods too. A handful of headshots won’t cover every stage of your customer’s journey. Your website, social media, emails, and ads all need different types of images to work effectively.
Think: confident portraits, candid action shots, lifestyle behind-the-scenes, details, and authentic moments. A session designed to capture these different facets means you have a photo library ready to engage clients or audiences wherever they are in their decision making.
Real example
The team at Monsellier Law are currently in a growth phase. Which meant they needed their brand shoot to represent who they are today and have longevity as they bring on new hires and rebrand the business. The goal with their shoot was to showcase their personal, friendly yet expert approach. Their gorgeous pooches Mollie and Millie are key members of the Monsellier office team so they needed to feature too! We selected two locations for their shoot and shot a range of imagery that allowed their personalities and vibe to shine through.
Consistency builds trust. Your visuals need to align with your brand.
Your photos should feel unmistakably “you”; from wardrobe choices to lighting and matching your brand’s personality and values.
If your images look like stock photos or belong to a different industry, you’ll confuse or even alienate your audience. When your photos consistently reinforce your brand messaging, clients feel more confident investing in you.
Real Example
The Urban Advisory were working on a complete brand refresh when they got in touch looking for a full suite of images that would showcase their knowledge, globally significant expertise and collaborative approach. Directors Greer and Natalie had a very clear brief, including their strategic thinking on how these images needed to align with their positioning as intelligent, trusted advisors and their brand’s values of sustainability, collaboration, and future thinking. They were clear with me: “no influencer or girl next door vibes”.
Together we created a modern, clean, architecturally inspired library of brand images that will serve their social media, website and press kit for years to come. Below is just a tiny snippet from hundreds of images. Oh, and to make sure their website felt distinctly kiwi, TUA also made the smart decision to supplement their shoot with authentic New Zealand stock imagery and video from Truestock (where I am a contributing photographer). You can view my Truestock images here.
Repurpose like a pro. Stretch your shoot for months of content.
Your shoot isn’t a one-and-done deal. Repurposing images across platforms and formats keeps your brand fresh without constant new photoshoots.
Stories, reels, blog headers, newsletters, and LinkedIn posts all need tailored images. The more versatile your session, the more value you get.
Real Example
Karina, author of “All In: A Mother’s Journey Through Autism”, is described as a Unicorn in Health. The multitalented medical professional now focuses on advocating for families with neurodiverse children. Her personal brand shoot needed to demonstrate her expertise and also capture the more vulnerable side of her as a mother navigating the New Zealand health system with her own son. Along with capturing different activities and attributes Karina wanted to showcase a variety of moods so that she would have a library of images to pull from to accompany her NeuroThrive Substack post themes. One of the images shot during this personal brand session is also the cover of her book and she has multiple author headshots to choose from for press materials. Karina’s full gallery was more than 100 images. Here’s just a small sample.
