What to wear for your Newborn Photo Shoot - 5 Ideas

5 tips for your perfect Newborn photo session outfit

I have nothing that fits! What am I meant to wear?

Do you know how often I see those words appear in a text or email from a soon-to-be new mum? Hint: a lot!

I totally get it! It’s a really vulnerable time. You’ve just had a baby. Most likely your body still doesn’t feel like your own again yet and you’ve had no time to shop because, you know…new baby!

So the thought of trying to find something photo worthy is completely overwhelming. But I’d hate to think that wardrobe-dread would be enough to put you off capturing this incredible time.

All of my newborn photo session clients receive a comprehensive prep guide to take the hassle out of deciding what to wear and figuring out how to prepare your home.

Today I’m sharing some of my favourite tips specifically for mums.

Tip 1: Comfort is key!

This is true for everyone involved, but especially for mums who have just had a baby. My goal is for you to feel as beautiful, yet relaxed as possible.

I want you to be able to easily snuggle with your family - seated or curled up if that’s possible for you. Dresses, maternity jeggings or pants with soft, wide elasticated waistbands are going to be your friend when you’re sitting down especially. Eliminate from consideration anything that you will find yourself constantly fiddling with in order to feel “covered up” or relaxed.

Also, try everything on in advance of your session if you can and give yourself a day or two to send someone on a shopping spree if you truly don’t have anything you feel great in.

Looking for comfy pre and post-baby jeans? Here are my favourite picks:

Just Jeans Maternity “Over Belly Ripped Maternity Skinny Ankle

Just Jeans Maternity “Lexi Over Belly Boyfriend Maternity Jeans

Decjuba “Riley Skinny Jean” (I’m now more than 8 years past having my last baby and I still live in these maternity-like stretchy pants!).

And my favourite leggings award goes to:

Lorna Jane Maternity “Full Coverage Maternity Ankle Biter Leggings

Lorna Jane “Lotus No Chafe Ankle Biter Leggings

Tip 2: Think about the details- underwear & accessories

Think your outfit through all the way to the bottom layer. Make sure bra straps will tuck away and that you’ve chosen underwear that aren’t pinching or squeezing anywhere.

If you’re breast feeding and want to wear a maternity bra during your session choose one that you like the look of, that matches the colour of your outer layers, and that fits well. Again, you want to be able to move and snuggle without stopping to readjust or hide straps all the time.

Also think through those ‘top layer’ details. My advice is to keep your accessories simple and classic. Watches can really pull focus in a photo, so I recommend leaving them off for the day unless they’re of sentimental importance.

Tip 3: Neutral or earthy tones are calming

If you’re really unsure about what colours to wear I suggest neutral tones or an earthy palette. These colours are soft, inviting and calming - which often suits the tone of a newborn session.

But neutrals might not be your jam - and that’s ok too! Ultimately the colours you choose should come down to 2 things:

  1. what colours do you love to wear?

  2. what colours compliment your home decor?

Whatever your preference, you’ll want to come up with a complimentary palette of 2-3 colours or tones that everyone in the family can work with. Start with your own outfit first and then find complimentary things for everyone else after that.

Two final notes on colour: really bright colours (neon/fluro) will cast a visible reflection onto your face which is virtually impossible to edit out. And black almost always attracts lint.

Tip 4: Opt for texture over pattern

This is not to say you should completely disregard pattern, I’m not averse to a little patterny goodness. However very fine patterns (like super small stripes, tight zig zags, and itty bitty checks) can cause havoc for the camera creating a weird visual phenomenon called ‘moire’ 🤓.

Also avoid logos and words on shirts. They can date, and they create one more distraction that draws the eye away from what’s important.

Consider adding visual interest through textures and layering instead. I love layering textures such as open sweaters or cardigans over softer under layers.  Think about chunky knits or cuddly textures like mohair or cashmere. Linen also photographs beautifully - but I’m especially keen on texture if it means that what you’re wearing doesn’t require ironing!! Let’s face it, ironing is for fools.

tip 5: Pick fabrics that move and flow if you’re feeling self conscious

Floaty fabrics provide movement and textural interest. They can also provide great coverage, if you want it, without bulk. The other great thing about floaty skirts and dresses is that they give you something to play with and swish around when you want to create movement in a photo or your simply not sure what to do with your hands.

I hope these tips have given you some ideas for where to start with your newborn session outfit.

Remember at the end of the day I want you to feel as beautiful and relaxed as possible. Choose colours and fabrics you love.

Then just sit back, relax and enjoy the snuggles - because when it comes down to it absolutely NOTHING looks better on you than the besotted smile of a new mum.
